ATM and Debit Card Liability

Topic Progress:

While federal law allows for limited liability for ATM and debit card theft, the liability is vastly different than that of credit card fraud. If you report the loss within the first two business days of discovery, the liability is limited to $50. If the report is made between two and sixty days of discovery, the liability can be up to $500. If the victim waits more than sixty days, you may not be entitled to any reimbursement for lost funds.

Again, some financial institutions may have voluntary reimbursement amounts that are better than the federal law stipulates. Every consumer, regardless of whether or not they are a victim, should be aware of the liability limits that are established by their financial institution.
